The physics of a car crash

WebbKinetic energy is a energy of motion. Objects moving such as a moving vehicle have kinetic energy. If the a car crashes into a wall at 5km/h, the wall won’t do much damage to the car. If the car hits a wall at 60km/h, the car would most likely be unrepairable. Kinetic energy is similar to potential energy. WebbThe vehicle will necessarily rebound. The change in momentum as the vehicle rebounds is greater than in an equivalent inelastic collision. The force on an occupant is therefore greater and that is clearly worse for the occupant. On the other hand, because it is an elastic collision no energy will be dissipated in deforming the vehicle.

Webb5 aug. 2024 · In a crash, energy is converted over a much shorter period of time, which leads to higher peak forces.
